Further Planning | Film Opening Sequence

Upon having decided our location, we then decided to consider costumes, props, lighting and the acting that would be involved. We discussed each of the following and came up with what we would be doing for each:

Costumes: -
As a group we decided that as Anthony would be breaking into the old building, he would need to wear something that wouldn't give away his appearance too much. He informed us that he had a dark tracksuit and a hoody as well as a hat and scarf which would be used to cover his face when breaking in. This would make him look like a criminal and a rather mysterious looking figure that you wouldn't normally see walking down a street. By wearing these clothes, he will look the part - someone who would try to disguise themselves whilst breaking into a building.

Props: -
For props, the group decided on the following:
- Torch (for Anthony to use once breaking in to the dark abandoned building)
- Tools (so that he would be able to break into the building)
- A bag (to carry the tools)
- A piece of wood (to block entrance to the door)
- An old newspaper (for him to pick up and look at - giving a sense of mystery)
- Some old rubbish (for him to walk over as walking through the abandoned building)

Anthony told us that he would be able to bring some of the props (such as a torch and a bag). As I (Jake) was already aware of some of the things that were in the location, I informed the group that things such as tools (from the workshop), the piece of wood, old newspaper and rubbish were already scattered at the location in an abandoned area. This would work out effectively as the props were conveniently placed which meant we would not need to spend money buying anything extra. The old rubbish and newspaper that were already there helped tremendously and looked authentic.

Lighting: -
For lighting we were well aware that as the building was dark we would need extra lighting. We discussed a number of ways, such as Anthony bringing in a camera to explore and using night vision (in the storyline) as well as just using Anthony's torch to show what was around him. When at the location helping my dad with work, I decided to test the lighting with my own camera and use a torch and found that the lighting was extremely ineffective. I then consulted Samantha and Anthony and told them that the best option would be if we were to incorporate Anthony turning on a light switch in the story line. This would help provide extra light and as the lights were already old, it would look effective on screen. For the beginning part of the sequence, we knew that we would be fine as it would be shot outside during the day, with plenty of light, before him entering the building.

Acting: -
As for acting, we had already worked out the majority of the storyline when planning our storyboard. We knew that there would be no dialogue in the opening sequence and Anthony would just need to scream when he would go in and explore the hole in the wall. As shown in the storyboard, Anthony would walk down the side of the busy main road, cross over, walk towards the building, break in, walk around with his torch, begin to run and panic and climb into a hole and scream. He would also need to show a slightly scared expression on his face when he hears a loud bang and incorporate heavy breathing to make it seem realistic.
